I contacted Mr. Markowitz after being laid off from a job that I had had for a long time. The thing that struck me right away was how responsive he was. He would usually answer my (email) questions within hours and some of those responses were quite detailed. I wasn't expecting that because a friend often talked about waiting a week or more for her lawyer to answer her questions.
While he mentioned fees in an early email, he answered all of my questions before asking for any money and he could have ended up not making anything. As it turned out, though, my ex-employer was being intransigent about one particular issue that was important to me and I ended up paying Markowitz a few thousand dollars to write a letter to them, followed by a few follow-up letters. While that may seem like a lot of money for a few letters, they were successful, so, from my perspective, the money was well spent and I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Markowitz to others needing an employment lawyer.

A client has the right to refuse the settlement and go to trial especially when this was promissed and clearly discussed and agreed on prior to and during the signature of the agreement while taking on the case. Dropping the case midway because a client refuses to agree with the settlement once this is proposed by the opposite counsel midway, is neither fair nor ethical.

I retained Mr.Markowitz in 2019 to assist with a legal Matter, and my experience was extremely disappointing. Throughout the case, communication was minimal. I was left with 39 months of silence regarding my inquiries, never consulted before key steps were taken, and he failed to speak with me before the trial to explain the court procedure or discuss what questions he would ask or how he would represent my interests.
The trial ended in failure, and in my view, the services provided did not justify the high legal fees charged. I was not given a detailed bill breakdown until after the trial, and I’ve since had to continue dealing with the financial and legal consequences on my own.
In my opinion, clients deserve transparency, fair billing, and respectful communication from their lawyer — unfortunately, I did not receive that here. I’m sharing my experience to help others make informed decisions before hiring legal representation.

I would say without a doubt that Howard is one of the best employment lawyers in Ontario. Most lawyers I've seen or talked to only cares about imposing their high fees on you. Howard has a great heart and he gave me very expensive legal advise for free because he truly cares that justice prevails for the unjustly treated. He did this out of his good heart knowing that my case is not worth it for any lawyer to handle on a commercial basis. Very knowledgeable lawyers with a true passion for justice like Howard are rare. Mr. Markowitz responded to my inquiries right away with highly useful information and guidance.
In my experience in general, zero guidance is offered without cash on the barrelhead. This is unfortunate because it may cost several $400 consulting sessions to even find the right firm, and then the right firm for your financial situation.
Now this is not an encouragement to solicit free advice. Mr. Markowitz is aware that I will be working with him exclusively should I need to proceed further on my matter. I think it's a great way of establishing trust and a better way of selling. No one is in business for free but some are in business because they have a passion for it. I don't necessarily need to be seen as a person but when I see this kind of treatment it tells me that this is a person not just turning a procedural crank. I have intense passion for my job and respect others who do as well. Especially in cases where their dedication will have a large impact on my life.

He responded with a very detailed e-mail the next day with what a 'standard' (i.e. fair) amount was for my particular situation based on my title, field of work, reason for termination, my age, number of years worked, etc., and what more I could expect if I re-negotiated with my employer or even escalated it to court, including the potential cost involved. I was terminated "with cause", (their opinion), from a large
institution after 22.25 years of faithful service. I was confused. I
was let go 5 days before Christmas, and, had been accused/convicted of

He was the only one to bring an assistant into our first meeting, who was my secondary contact when Howard was out of the office or any urgencies came up. I wasn't charged any more for this extra support, and received dozens of emails from Howard personally never more than a couple of days later, many on weekends and sometimes into late night. He also brought a student lawyer into both mediation and Pre-Trial negotiations to help even the head count against my company, and faster with the Kleenex than Howard who was more focused on the numbers instead. It's true they stopped working until the next steps were paid, but those were my only delays for 8 months until we settled before the trial day.
