I had the opportunity to work with Kathryn Smithen during a very difficult time in my life, she has been a God sent. Going through family court is never easy, but going through one involving abuse adds a whole other layer of pain and fear. She listened to my story, believed me, showed compassion and understanding.
As we prepared the motion, she was incredibly meticulous. She explained everything in plain English and made sure I understood, I never felt rushed or dismissed.
Ms. Smithen’s attention to detail is exceptional. She is incredibly knowledgeable and compassionate. She is a lawyer that genuinely cares about her client’s outcomes.
One of the best assets she has is her own personal experience, she not only prepares you for court but also the emotional aspect of it. I will forever my grateful for her kindness and generosity. Divorce/separation is never easy, especially with children involved. However, Ms. Smithen was able to support me with clarity and strategically, while being mindful of my family. Kathryn Smithen was a life saver. I felt so overwhelmed, caught off guard and confused by my husband walking out and asking for a divorce. Kathryn Smithen supported me in a kind and professional manner through the lengthily process of divorce. She laid all my options out and respectfully gave her opinion, and made me feel that she respected my decisions, even if they were not her opinion of what may be best. She is a strong advocate for women and took my case on probono after my legal aid ran out. She caught things that I would not have noticed had changed in agreements and made me feel secure and calm when threats were made about pulling support and custody of my small child. Equality and equity were always at the top of her list with an emphasis on child welfare. I feel she had my child’s best interest in mind and I appreciate her support. High recommend Kathryn Smithen for family law cases to advocate for the child’s best interest, which led to my best interests too.

Kathy is a very personable lawyer. She will not treat you like another file or number. I was with another lawyer before I made the switch to Kathy. The previous law firm had a bigger name but they will see you nothing but another retaining fee working on their clock. Kathy is an experienced family law lawyer. She understands the system and will not make false promises to you. She is a straight shooter and has no intend to drag your billable hours. She is honest and a true professional. She sets realistic expectation throughout the entire process, and it gives me ease of reference that nothing came as a surprise to me.

Dear Kathryn,
The legal process that I have gone through was probably one of the most draining challenges I have faced in my life. I realize now that you were right all along and if only I have trusted you more it would have saved me from several anxiety attacks.
You have inspired me from the very start, I was moved by your life story. I have always believed in the good of everybody and your life and accomplishments are a testament to that. You are the epitome that anything is possible if you put your mind and heart to it, and brave it out there.
Your honesty is what helped me stay grounded. You have never given me false hopes and have always reminded me to act and counter-react within the boundaries of the law.
And now that I got the justice that I deserve, I can move on with my life. This would not be possible if you have not believed in me; and for this I am forever grateful.

I had initially hired a different firm to represent me during my divorce. Unfortunately, I was not pleased with the way they were doing things, for that reason I decided to look for a different lawyer. Ms Smithen made me feel confident the moment I step into her office. She understood the situation and made me understand it better. I really liked the toughness and firmness she showed when communicating with the other party. Yet, always with professionalism. When you go through a separation, divorce or custody battle you can feed very scared and unkowledgeble. If you are lucky you get a lawyer who can help you emotionally or a lawyer who is excellent at the law. With Kathy Smithen you get both! Think of every negative stereotype you've ever heard or seen that depicts what a lawyer is like; Kathryn is the opposite of all of it. Non-judgemental, patient, competent, confident, she is the whole package. She walked me through the most devastating and confusing time of my life and left my children and me in a much better position than we had ever been. Having to write this review has been so difficult , because I honestly do not know where to start.There are so many positive things I would love to say about Ms. Smithen.
If only I can give her a 10 star on this review, I would !! I absolutely LOVE this lawyer. she is phenomenal. Before having Ms. smithen as my lawyer I looked for several others, and I felt that I was not getting that support I needed , however when I met with her I felt connected and comfortable right away and knew that support was going to be there 100%
she is a no nonsense kind of lawyer who will tell you how things are going to be and what’s on her mind. she will work hard at your case to get the results that will benefit you the most. At no point was I unsure about her her abilities. Mr Smithen was available to me through all forms of communication at all times. I would highly recommend her to anyone who wants a family lawyer who will fight for them until the very end.

When I was looking for a lawyer to help me with my custody and divorce, it was important for me that I would be able to connect and completely trust my lawyer, I found Kathy and read all ratings I can about her. Ultimately, it was her life story that urged me to reach out to her to take me on as a client. I made the best choice for myself and my daughter by having Kathy represent me. Even if I am on legal aid, she never treated me as if I was a lower level client. She took her time not only to explain what is going on with my case but also ensuring I am getting support for things outside of her scope that she knew I was dealing with. I truly couldn’t rate Ms. Smithens work with just “5 stars”. My situation was one of the most intimidating scenarios I’d ever been involved in and without her help and guidance, her positivity and knowledge and just her confidence in me and my case, I have no idea what I would have done. She was very thorough and comforting, informative and everything else you hope for in your lawyer. The amount of times I had to reach out to her for assistance throughout my case, she responded to each and every email with great advice and encouragement. Beyond all that, a great pleasure to work with her straight-talking style, confidence, and competence in all areas of her practice. We witnessed our daughter, who was the client and had some tough circumstances, grow in positivity and trust through her relationship with Ms Smithen. Instead of feeling defeated or discouraged, our daughter felt empowered, trusting and safe. She expressed her confidence in this way "Kathy will not let anything bad happen". Ms Smithen is professional and cares for her clients. I was able to focus in my situation and rely all the legal stuff to her. Due to her knowledge, I was able to secure a home for my kids. She offers good advice and makes sure the job gets done. Her rates are fair and the quality of her job is excellent. She is prompt to respond even on weekends or evenings. During the worst time of my life I felt protected and care for. Without her I would have been a mess. She is strong communicator and when in court she has a great presence and makes you feel comfortable in an unfamiliar environment. When sick you call a doctor. Mrs. Smithen is a wonderful lawyer who helped me get out of a violent marriage. She was kind and gentle with me and my kids. She knew what my concerns were before I even asked her about things. She was very tough but fair and polite with my husband's lawyer and made it clear that she was sticking by me no matter what. She seemed to know everybody who worked at the court house from the clerks to the police officers. I always felt in good hands and protected even though I was scared to death of going to court. If I had to go through it all again, she is the only lawyer I would trust to be my champion.

WOW is all I can say about this lawyer. I was a little nervous given all that has been rpeorted about her past, but make no mistake, this is a take no prisoners lawyer! Whtat a force of personality, integrity, guts and will power. She worked her butt off for me. Worked many late nights and weekends to ensure my matter settled. Got my ex-husband to stop his nonsense and even saved me money in the process and set up a savings plan for my son's education so we don't have to go back to court in 10 years. Always thinking ten steps ahead of me and the other lawyer and my ex. And the judge was really impressed with her thorough work. A real professional and a sweetheart. SHE IS GREAT!

Ms. Smithen worked really hard to get me my 2 daughters back after I hadn't seen them for five years. Had to have a Trial. She gave it her all and made it happen. Seeing the look on my little girl's face was worth everything. I am so grateful to her. Best lawyer ever and great person, too. Very dedicated, professional and above all caring. Takes her job as a lawyer really seriosly.
